My quarterhorse has a very wide back. Does anyone use a saddle built for a gaited horse on their quartehorse? I have been riding my horse for the last 3 years in a western saddle with "quarterhorse bars." He has always had some dry spots behind the withers, but now I am noticing some white hairs coming in. His behavior when saddling and riding is wonderful. I sense no resistance or soreness in him, other than a reluctance to change leads at a gallop (at times - could be other reasons.) However, I love this horse and want him to be comfortable, so am considering a different saddle. I know "full quarterhorse bars" would be better, but was also wondering about a saddle built for a gaited horse. My understanding is that they are wider and allow for more shoulder movement. Any other suggestions/comments from wide-backed horse owners would be most welcome! Thanks!

Hi, Michelle,
You might want to investigate treeless saddles. There have been discussions on this site about them.

Thanks Holly. The comments on the treeless saddles look pretty mixed. There are both big fans as well as people who don't like them at all.
I would like info on 2 other types of saddles:
1. Saddles made for gaited horses, and particularly if anyone is using one on a wide-backed quarterhorse.
2. Flexible tree saddles
I would love to hear comments from people who use either of the above.
Thanks a million.

Hi Michelle, I bought a Simiflex Trail saddle from Simco for my mare. We had problems finding a saddle to fit her, and this works. The tree has a wood pommel and cantle, but the rest is made of "Elastoid" and conforms to the horse from body heat. So far it seems to work, as the saddle fits her perfectly. It takes about an hour of riding to make it work on another horse. The saddle is quite comfortable. I haven't tried it for all day, but 5 hours was just fine. It is also light weight - only 25 lbs.
