I have an old english saddle and the name on it is: Sattlerei bein Kloster Schonthal. I bought it used for $90 over 10 years ago and the woman told me it was a nice german made saddle. It is still in great shape and I enjoy riding my TB in it. I just wondered if anyone can tell me anything about it. I mostly ride western so am not familiar with the English saddles.

Yes, it is a nice German saddle. I remember people purchasing them when I lived in Wiesbaden, Germany in the mid-60s. Assuming it is in good condition and has been cared for, it is probably re-saleable (at least) for between $300 and $500. Maybe more as saddle prices have gone up so high - depends on seat size and width.

If you use google advanced search to search on the phrase "Kloster Schonthal" and the word saddle, you will get a number of listings.

Cheers.

Christine,
Thanks so much for the information. It is in near excellent shape..faded where the leathers rub. It is pecan in color and the seat size is probably 16. I just re-oiled it with Ko-cho-line leather dressing (a tip I got from this site) and it is beautiful. I have always wondered about it and felt it was a great deal with girth and irons for $90. - Ann

An administrative aside. This thread reminded me I answered a similar question for a lady who was considering buying a Berney dressage saddle but didn't know anything about Berneys or the approximate value of the saddle. As Berney is an Irish company I was able to give her their website details. I went looking for that post and can't find it anywhere using the search engine and checking the archived discussions - which seems odd...

I suspect the post has been moved to the archived discussions Imogen. The frequent searching of the site has become such a drain on the server (CPU usage) it is the main reason the site has slowed down the past 6 months. We took archieved discussions off the search engine to get some relief. We are looking at other options also hoping to get everything back on line.
