I use a snaffle bit on my 7 yr old horse. He recently has decided he doesn't want the bit in his mouth and will lower his head to the ground or raise it high so that I can't get the bit in his mouth. He had his teeth done recently and had a vet check. Any suggestions on how I can overcome his resistance? Once the bit is in his mouth, he is fine.

My older mare clamps her mouth shut at times also. I can get my fingers in the bars and rub her tongue, but she seems to enjoy it. She also has her eyes closed during these sessions. I employ a lot of patience and eventually she'll open ever so slowly and I make my move. I don't make a big deal about it. Good luck.
