Hi,
Looking for ideas for my arabian mare. She has chronic laminitis (though is not IR or overweight) and a strained ligament in her knee and is on stall rest. They try to keep another horse in the barn with her when the others go out but she is very bored already. She shows no interest in dangling toys and obviously can't have any of those starch-based pony pops or lickit type treats. I don't have a lot of control over her environment now that she is in her winter barn aside from what to feed but if anyone has any ideas for something I can put in her stall that doesn't cause extra work for the barn manager it would be appreciated...
Thanks!

Tamara,

How about a stall mirror?

Good luck,

I seem to remember someone posting that they used clicker training on a stall bound horse (simple tricks that don't stress the injured area) to stave of boredom...for at least part of the time anyway.

When we had horses on stall rest moving them around helped. They had their day stall and their night stall, sometimes we moved them 3-4 times a day. It seemed they were happier with their "stall turn out" and different scenery. We would put them in stalls that hadn't been cleaned yet sometimes and they enjoyed "smelling" the other horses. It isn't a lot of work and seems to cut boredom.

What a great idea Diane! Especially if you have windows in the stalls .. moving from one side of the barn to the other would give a different view, and different horses to socialize with. Genius!
