My 18 year old mare has been diagnoses with THO she is being treated with meds at this time if she worsenes she will have the surgery. I was wondering if and when she is back to work what I should ride her in. Lucky for me she goes well in both a eggbut snaffle and a bosal hackamore. I love to ride both western and dressage with her, but I an afraid to use the snaffle and my western bosal looks pretty funny with my dressage saddle. Just curious what you think or if anybody else is dealing with this disorder.

Hello Terric,
I see no problem with using a bit if she recovers well.

She seems to be recovering very well, I just assumed the snaffle would cause her pain since her tongue seemed to be so sensitive when this all started. So I am worried about anything I put in her mouth.

Thanks for your Advice. - Terri

Terric, since she goes well in a bosal, perhaps you could try a side pull bridle with when riding dressage until you are ready to use a bit again

Hi Mary, I am not familiar with a side pull bridle.

My mare had surgery for THO (Stylohyoidectomy) in February 2014, her recovery seems very good however when I ride her she seems to want to keep her head very low. When she is ridden with contact she is very obedient but can't wait for a loose rein and then roots her head long and low. I am afraid that she should not be ridden with contact, just long and low but I hate her going around with her head on the ground. I have just about quit riding her all together, but I can't help but feel I still have a lot of horse left. She is now 19 and plays out in her field like she is a 2 year old, runs to me when I call her, everything is good until I ride her. I was wondering what the outcome usually is for this recovery. Do horses fully recover from this? Any comments are appreciated.

Terric, is it possible that she has some back pain from the saddle or some other imbalance maybe through hoof-trims/shoeing?

As for healing from a surgery, I know that the past two injuries I've had (when I was 58yo and 59yo) have taken a year each for healing. It's possible that she may not be quite healed yet.

Hello Terric,
There is a review of 22 cases including outcomes at HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Nervous System » Neurological Conditions Not Covered Above » Temporohyoid Osteoarthropathy & Hyoid Disease. Concerning your horses behavior it is hard to interpret what is causing this but pain or vestibular disorders are possible. To check for pain you might try a course of NSAID's or gabapentin (for neuropathic pain a condition associated with THO) to see if it stops the behavior.
