As mentioned above, my horse destroys the blankets of his herd mates, and so in blanket season, he wears a hard metal muzzle when turned out. He can eat and drink, but we are constantly repadding and trying to make the muzzle more unbearable. He is at a small farm, just 5 horses in total. I have read a bit about applying bitter apple to the other horses blankets, but at this point if that does not work, I would have to replace any damaged blankets. I find the muzzle cruel, and would love to find a better solution or a kinder muzzle

The only other solution would be to not blanket the horses or separate them when blanketed. I gave up blanketing many years ago after one of my horses almost broke his leg by getting it hung up inside the blanket of another horse while they were playing.

I often see horses without blankets thriving in cold climates like S. Dakota. The need enough feed of course, and some protection from wind is certainly desirable...but the coats get long and the horses are fat and apparently happy. Super extreme temperatures might be different, but it gets to 20 degrees C. below zero often in areas where horses do fine given good feed.
