I did Parelli for a little while...it certainly gave me a healthy respect for the horse! I know over 2 1/2 years I have built up a very strong sense of trust between myself and my horse. I always tell people to get a programme...Ken Faulkners, Quantum Savvy's, Clinton Anderson's they're pretty much all the same stuff. But to be prepared to fix the stuck spot along the way. My horse overbalanced on the front and dived that inside leg into the circles, lost balance and sped up so "passenger" stuff was disastrous for her. I went to a reining teacher ( the English instructors in my area couldn';t help so much) she needed work with the outside rein as well as holding her up on the inside.
I'm not really into the "Love, language and leadership stuff...." I'm also a little sus about a trainer that says pull the inside rein to the belt tab on the side of your jeans...on a different horse it will be bent to a different spot. If I'm working a Freisian or Morgan I'm going to hold my bending rein higher than a tough old quarterhorse gelding.
I think doing some "Natural Horsemanship" is a helluva lot better than not doing any...some people I've worked out...are just riders...but the thing with a lot of these programmes is that they don't tell you to fix the leaking spot. One good step is worth a dozen bad ones. Also on a given day my horses back up goes from Level 4 to Level 1 if I'm not on it in an instant...but I don't take that personal.
