Just wanted to thank everyone in this thread for the great advice. I have a 4yo Friesian who will stand for mounting from the ground but he's too big for that now! (closing in on 17HH) I took the idea of groundwork before mounting and worked him on the lunge line - just a few circles in each direction at a slow, lazy trot.

Then we'd try the block. If he moved away from the block, back to the lunge line. This time more circles, and at a working trot. Back to the block. If he didn't stand again, back to the lunge line at a canter.... you get the idea.

The first time, it took to the canter for him to figure it out. Second and third times, working trot. Yesterday (fourth time) after the lazy trot, he realized that it behooved (ha-ha) him to stand right away. I'm going to keep reinforcing the stand after the lazy trot for a few more times before abandoning the ground work (pre-mount) all together.

So, thanks for the foundation on mounting training and hopefully my idea will work with someone else.

Kind Regards,
Joni
