Probably not the best place to post but when I use a twisted snaffle on my mare, she either will lower her head way to the ground, turn her neck to the right stiffly, or hold her head real high. Perhaps it is a bad habit and I want it gone. If I use a bosal its the same issue with the turned neck. She appears to have wolf teeth, should I get these out. She's 10. Any other bit suggestions appreciated.

No this is fine joann. Chances are good she is protesting the feel of the twisted snaffle bit in her mouth and the way the bosal feels on her muzzle. It is usually easier to find a bit that works well with a horse than train a horse to a bit it does not like.

However I cannot rule out the wolf teeth with the bit, but is not an issue with the bosal. We have a article that discusses wolf teeth and it is at Care for Horses » Particular Situations & Procedures » Equine Dentistry.

Dr. O I went and read up on Equine Dentistry and now I'm confused. The teeth in my girl are lower jaw in between the two sets of teeth. To be honest I never looked up thinking the snaffle would rest on the bottom area only. I will look again and revisit the dental area. I'm working now. j

You are confused: you are looking at the canines and not the wolf teeth. These should be well in front of the bit and not causing problems.

DrO,

Maybe her horse's canines are long enough to interfere with the horse taking the bit? Our vet would trim the canines when they got longer.

Sounds to me like the horse is avoiding your cues Joann, try using the bosal and don't use two reins until she stops avoiding. Do lots of lateral bends, release as soon as you can when she gives, even the slightest give at first.

You can do lateral bends with the twisted wire, but if she's stiff in the neck she's gonna react more if you use two reins with this bit.

Good day,

Okay, thanks I haven't been out with her this week and now we are getting "big" storm. These canines are small and if they don't cause problems then I'll assume she is the problem and work on the issue with suggestions from the group. Thanks all. j
