My five-year-old mare mule has played so hard with a pasture mate that she caused sores on his neck. I moved her to another pasture, and she is starting to do the same to another pasture mate. I'd like to find something I can "paint on" the pasture mate's neck that will not irritate his skin but make her think twice about grabbing hold. Any ideas?

Heidi, I would consider one of the leather grazing muzzles as a more reliable fix.

Dr. O, I've considered one of those halters but (1) she's still on hay at this time and is at her most obnoxious during feed time, and (2) she's a high-energy girl and maintains her weight perfectly without one. I'd hate to have her lose weight unnecessarily when it's time to turn her out to pasture. Don't get me wrong--I'm open to other ideas. I just don't see the grazing halter as a fix in her case.

I checked out the second pasture mate again today. He looks all healed up. He's more assertive than the other, so maybe my "cure" has already been found: a fiester pasture mate. If things change, I'll get back to this post.
