Hello Diane, I like Amy's advice of mini-trail rides gradually increasing the distance. Ihad a mare that was frantic when she left "home" on her own-I bought her at 6 years old and a lot of basics were missing with her. Before every ride we did lots of on the ground training to get her focussing on me -parelli stuff etc. and then we would go up and down my driveway gradually increasing the distance every time to get her confidence up. When she improved on the distance and would remain quiet I would ask her to whoa and stand then walk on etc. in both directions. Only when I know that she was confident in me and able to handle going a little further did we venture out. It took exactly one year to take her out by herself around our canal, the time was well worth it, the investment in time then payed off! she is a fabulous riding horse now. One of the people I trained with gave me the best advice I ever heard - he said if your trying to teach your horse something and they aren't getting it or they seem confused or anxious then your asking too much and you need to take the pressure off-even when sometimes it seems like there isn,t that much pressure to begin with they are all different -just like kids!!!
