Discussion on Teaching a five year old to lead at a Trot
Author Message

Hi All,

I just recently purchased a 5 year old Arabian gelding. He leads well, and is greenbroke (I'm finishing him). Next summer my intention is to start riding in the competitive endurance rides, but I recently discovered that he does not know how to lead at a trot (which he has to do for the vet checks). This is something I've never encountered with a horse this age, and am not sure how to teach him the trot. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Thanks!

You really have a couple of choices. But first I would carry a dressage type whip to make sure when you're trotting that he respects your space.
Then you can either start off at a walk, cluck to him to trot, if no response reach behind you with either the end of the lead or the small whip and tap him. He should pick it up.
If you have a friend to help they can act as the impetus for the trot by clucking(or whatever noise works) waving their arms, whatever it takes for your horse to move. This is where its important that he respects your space.
