I have a question for those of you that show your young WP horses in bosals. Do you start them from day one in a bosal? If not, do you start in a snaffle and switch to the bosal? How do you know when they're ready to switch over? And, more importantly, if they're already going well in the snaffle, why bother to switch?

I've shown Western Pleasure for years but have always started my horses in snaffles and left them there. The last youngster I tried to use a bosal on was so petrified of it, I couldn't even get close enough to try it on him, never mind use it. Just the same, I think they do look pretty cool and was hoping to try showing another youngster in one. Since the mecate attaches below the chin there's not nearly the direct rein capabilities that a snaffle affords. How will I need to adjust my training/rein usage when using a bosal?
