I have a 10 year gelding with ERU. He is being seen by a top notch equine opthamologist who is VERY open to all opinions, studies, etc.
My gelding developed an ulcer late last year and we have been treating for the last 5 months. It is slowly healing but as soon as one gets better another one pops up or another complication - increased ocular pressure, small corneal blisters from pressure issues, etc.
The latest complication is severe swelling of both eyelids. He is on atropine to keep his pupils dilated but I am starting to suspect that he might be having a reaction to it.
The medical journals for 'people' list a common side effect as 'swelling of the eyelids after prolonged use'. I have not seen this listed anywhere in the equine journals.
Any input?

I have not heard of this reaction in horses but in human use it can be associated with irritation which may include swelling of the lids. One important difference in humans and horses is that atropine's mydriatic effects will last longer so requires less frequent application. How often are you applying the atropine?

My vet had me apply twice a day for five days and then every night on a continuing basis (over a 6 week period). He has glaucoma and ERU but then he got a very large melting ulcer followed by the small corneal blisters from inadequate water flow out of the cornea (?). Basically, a mess. Once I stopped the atropine the swelling started to subside almost immediately - within 12 hours. Five days later he is 'slightly' swollen but nothing like he was previously.
